FLASH FROM THE CHIEF: 244th United States Navy Birthday
FLASH FROM THE CHIEF: 244th United States Navy Birthday
As we celebrate our Navy birthday on 13 October, we remember there is no higher honor than to serve. This was exemplified by the sacrifices of our shipmates in the World War II Battle of Leyte Gulf, when the crews of USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) and the “Taffy 3” destroyer squadron intercepted enemy forces in the face of overwhelming odds. Although the destroyers were decimated in the action, they successfully protected our troops on the beach from attack, ensuring the eventual liberation of the Philippines and victory in the Pacific theater.

For 244 years, we have grown from six wooden ships to a global force that has left tracks on every continent and throughout world history. Our humble origins could never have hinted at the monumental variety of missions we fulfill today – all with our supply community’s vital support. Whether it’s the nuts and bolts that hold our fleets together, the fuel that propels them, or the food and clothing that our Sailors depend on, Navy supply has been closely tied to every aspect of Navy’s success from our humble beginnings to our state-of-the-art forces operating around the globe today.

As we celebrate our 244th birthday, be proud of our Navy, and be proud of your role. Our actions – both past and present – show there is no higher honor than to serve.

Happy 244th birthday, Navy!
