Announcing New Distinguished Alumnus Senator Gary Peters
We are pleased to announce on November 6th, 2021, the Navy Supply Corps Foundation Board of Directors selected U.S. Senator Gary Peters as the 60th Navy Supply Corps Foundation Distinguished Alumnus.*

The Navy Supply Corps Foundation Distinguished Alumni Program recognizes individual Supply Corps Officers who have distinguished themselves after their Naval career “by obtaining significant success in the public or private sector and who credit their Supply Corps experience as a basic foundation of further professional achievements.”

Senator Peters has represented the State of Michigan in the United States Senate since 2015. In the 117th Congress, he is the Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees the Department of Homeland Security and is the Senate’s top oversight committee. Senator Peters also serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

Peters volunteered for the U.S. Navy Reserve at age 34, where he earned a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist designation and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After the September 11th terrorist attacks on the U.S., Peters volunteered again for drilling status and served overseas as part of his Reserve duty. He also completed the Naval Command and Staff course from the U.S. Naval War College.

Senator Peters stated that: “I am deeply honored by this recognition. My time as a Supply Corps Officer has shaped who I am personally and as an elected official. During my time in the Navy Reserve, I served with some of the most patriotic individuals I’ve ever met. For us, it never mattered what our political ideology was – we focused on working together to accomplish our goals. The dedication of those I served with in the Navy Reserve reinforced in me that we must keep the promises we’ve made to those who have worn the uniform and served our country. Joining the Navy Reserve was one of the best decisions I have ever made = and the lessons I learned will continue guiding my work.”

Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Peters graduated from Rochester High School and went on to earn a B.A. in political science from Alma College. He later earned an M.B.A. in finance from the University of Detroit Mercy, M.A. in political science from Wayne State University; M.A. in philosophy from Michigan State University, and a law degree (J.D.) from Wayne State University Law School.

Prior to entering public service, Peters worked in the private sector for over 20 years as a financial advisor and in a variety of management positions with two major financial service firms. He was an assistant vice president at Merrill Lynch before becoming a vice president at UBS/PaineWebber.

Senator Peters and his wife, Colleen, live in Oakland County, Michigan and have three children: Gary Jr., Madeleine and Alana.
